Diego Ramirez first learned about the VTC program while working in an entry-level job at AutoZone in Charlotte, NC. He was helping a customer find an auto part needed for a repair he was doing at a nearby auto shop.
While searching for the part, the customer, Dejuanta “DJ” Brown, told Diego about his job and the training that led him there — which he obtained through the VTC Automotive program.
Eager to build a career and continue his education, Diego visited the VTC the following day, enrolled, and later graduated with Automotive certifications. Having recently emigrated from Colombia, South America, Diego had barriers including lack of driver’s license and no proof of education.
NCIA staff helped resolve these barriers by providing access to driving school and a connection to obtain his school transcripts and have them translated to English. Diego is now working at Valvoline, earning $15.50 per hour, and is continuing his academic education.
Diego Ramirez graduated VTC in May 2024, and DJ Brown in May 2023. Both Diego and DJ participated in the VTC through a grant provided by the NBA Foundation.
